Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project: Seoul, Korea

This project is one of the influential project in Korea. I live not far from here so I have a chance to go there sometimes. I remember that the site was fully covered as a four-lane overpass and the site next to the overpass housed a dence warren of small business. It had caused heavy traffic jam and the area was polluted.


The project required the dismantling and demolition of an elevated highway, and the uncovering of the historic 5.8 km waterway that ran underneath. This was transformed into an ecologically sensitive green pedestrian corridor.


Zone 1: History
The Japanese colonial administration first began dredging Cheonggyecheon stream.
National and imperial motifs highlight this zone’s emphasis on history. The foundations and stones of earlier bridges were included as decorative elements.

Zone 2: Urban+Culture
The middle zone has recreation areas, waterfront decks, and stepping stones that bridge the two banks. Its design focused on using environmentally friendly materials.

Zone 3: Nature
The stream widens as it enters the final zone, which was designed to look overgrown and untamed.



They used a very smart and interactive design which included 22 different intersections and bridges. The developers and urban planner also looked at the cultural activities that took place at this site decades before the expressway existed and integrated them with effective lighting.
It has benefits included, increased tourism, increased pedestrian traffic resulting in boosting health, and the redevelopment of old streets within Seoul that boosted business, economy and real estate.

Dongdaemun Design Plaza & Park

Dongdaemun is Korea's Treasure No.1. And Dongdaemun stadium was located nearby Dongdaemun the Japanese occupation period but gradually Dongdaemun stadium is less well known for the two stadiums that are located there, and more famous for the giant market that surrounds them. The stadium were used parking space or small market it doesn't have any more value on this site. The goverment decided to redevelop this two stadiums site.

The site designed by Zaha Hadid. She says " A fundamental aim of the scheme is to bring delight and inspiration to the people of Seoul by establishing a cultural hub in the centre of one the busiest and most historic districts of the city"

The form of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and Park revolves around the ancient city wall, which forms the central element of the composition, creating a continuous landscape that physically links the park and plaza together. And new park creates a place for leisure, relaxation, and refuge. The park reinterprets elements of traditional Korean garden design: reflecting pools, lotus ponds, pebble beds and bamboo groves, with no single feature dominating the perspective.

Han River Art Island, Seoul by designcamp moonpark
I found some interesting design in Korea. It location is heart of korea which is Han River. It means like Thames River in Uk. It is very important part of city.
The Designcamp moonpark has designed an arts complex in Seoul which features a flowing cantilevered roof based on the movement of traditional Korean dancers. It is the Korean practice’s winning entry to create a landmark on the South Korean capital’s Nodeul Island, which is currently divided by an eight-lane motorway that spans the Han River.









The Han River Art Island which will have a 1,900-seat symphony hall, a 1,500-seat opera house and a performance hall with a capacity to accommodate 300 people.

The eight-storey building will create a bridge over the motorway and incorporate landscaped parks. The roof will be punctuated by a series of diamond-shape roof lights and photovoltaic cells.

Gwanghwamun Plaza in Seoul


The new plaza is nearly 550 meters long and 35 meters wide. Along each side lengthwise is a meter-high wall running 365 meters with a stream of engravings of key historical events in Seoul dating back to the founding of the Joseon Dynasty in 1397. The new plaza features a statue of Haechi sitting in guardian position outside Gwanghwamun Gate. Haechi is the mythical dragon and guardian of justice that was recently adopted by the city of Seoul for use as a brand image.
In the underground walkway area near Gwanghwamun subway station there will be a exhibits about Haechi and “Yukjo Street” where the Joseon Dynasty government agencies were located.



Recent big event was snow board jump. The event was featured 40 international snowboarders who will be showcasing their skills on a specially built 34 meter high and 100 meter long ramp in the heart of Seoul.
Gwanghwamun Square and its surrounding area will come to life with concerts and light shows scheduled to take place throughout the weekend. Free entertainment and refreshments provided for visitors of the 3 day event.

Framed by a vibrant hard urban edge, the new harbor park includes a generous watery interior where the soft organic shaped islands of gardens are constructed invoking the quintessential asian image of mountains in water.
